Second Degree Matriculation and Minimum Residency Requirement

Second Degree Matriculation Requirements

  • Students who have earned a BA or BS degree from WGU or a bachelor’s degree from an institution accredited by an accreditor recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, may only matriculate into a degree program if the program has 25% or more of the program competency units left to complete, in addition to required clinical or capstone course(s).
  • Students who have earned a WGU master’s degree or a master’s degree from an institution accredited by an accreditor recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, may only matriculate into an additional WGU graduate degree program if the program has 25% or more of the program competency units left to complete, in addition to required clinical or capstone course(s).
  • Students may not complete two MBA, two MSN, two MAT, or two MED degree programs.

  • Students may not complete more than two graduate degrees from the same college.
  • Students who completed a licensure degree program in teaching at WGU or a regionally accredited institution may not matriculate into an initial licensure baccalaureate, post-baccalaureate or MAT degree program (see also the policy on Licensure Requirements for Admission to the Teachers College, note that students who have graduated from a WGU post-baccalaureate program may return to complete the corresponding MAT degree by completing course requirement(s) for the current catalog program at the time of enrollment).
  • Students may not complete both the undergraduate and graduate teaching degrees with the same concentration.
  • Students may not matriculate into two WGU programs simultaneously.
  • Students who completed B.A. Mathematics 5-9 at WGU may not enroll in M.A. Mathematics 5-9. They can enroll in M.A. Mathematics 5-12.
  • Students who completed B.A. Science at WGU may not enroll in the M.A. Science Education in the same subject area as their undergraduate degree at WGU. For example, graduates of B.A. Science in Chemistry at WGU may not enroll in MA Science Education in Chemistry. Graduates of a WGU BA Science program must select an MA Science Education program that offers a new subject area and new endorsement area to their teaching license.

Minimum Program Completion Requirements

  • Students must earn at least 25% of the program competency units from WGU.
  • Nursing students at the graduate level must earn at least 30% of the program competency units from WGU.
