Preassessment and Objective Assessment

Both preassessment and objective assessment results are provided using four categories: unsatisfactory, approaching competence, competent, and exemplary.

A score of “competent” or “exemplary” is required to pass a preassessment and/or objective assessment.  Exactly what constitutes competence for a given assessment is carefully determined by WGU’s Assessment department in concert with a group of experts in the subject matter being assessed.

Understanding and retrieving your results can be done by reviewing the coaching report that aligns to the completed assessment. You can see a high level view of overall competency in the Overall Competence Indicator at the top of the coaching report. This shows you how your demonstration of competency thus far aligns to the competency requirements and the categories described above.

The coaching report will give you an indication of your strengths and weaknesses by competency area. The report should be carefully reviewed with your mentor so that you can determine a plan together to improve any areas that require additional study.

NoteFocus your studies on concepts and not specific assessment questions. If you have questions, please contact your course mentor.

Note: Students will receive a truncated result that will reflect their competency level category based off the content design for the course they are completing. The result information is further explained by assessment type below.

Preassessments

Overall assessment result information is displayed at the top of the coaching report. Each competency being assessed is included below, and the topics associated with each competency are provided below the competency text. Each competency can be expanded to show its topics by clicking on the arrow button on the left-hand side of the competency description. Each competency has a corresponding percent value that indicates how much of the assessment is represented by that competency. Please reference this area to determine where you need to focus your efforts for continuous learning and further improvement around demonstrating competency.

Note: For preassessments only, topics in the coaching report can be expanded to show the questions associated with them. These questions indicate whether the question was answered correctly, what your response was, and what the correct response is. These questions can be used to help identify concepts that might be more challenging for you. Because the objective assessment will not use the same questions as the preassessment, it is important that you focus your study on overarching concepts rather than limiting yourself only to those questions and answers.

Results will not be "rounded" to the next category. If a result falls short of the "competent" category, another attempt will be required regardless of how near to the competent level the attempt falls.

The final pass/fail status is indicated by the icon and category text in the top left corner of the report; if it shows "competent" or "exemplary," the result is a pass, otherwise an additional attempt will be required. The score bar is provided for illustrative purposes only. Your best next steps, if you do not demonstrate competency, is to contact your course mentor and work together to develop a plan to help you in your continuous progression efforts towards graduation.

Note: The assessment results policy, and how results are identified and published, are all approved measures by the Department of Education and the respected accreditation teams.

WGU values, and actively seeks, the opinions of its students about their educational experience. To provide feedback regarding the coaching reports, please use the Course Feedback link at the bottom of your study plan within the course of study.
