WGU teacher candidates are to follow the calendar of the cooperating school system. This includes attending in-service days, E-Learning days, and parent-teacher conferences. Teacher candidates must keep the same contract hours as their host teacher and participate in all professional activities (including professional development) in which the classroom host teacher participates. During the first week students should ask the host teacher about their expectations regarding arrival time before school starts and departure time after school ends. Generally, teacher candidates will need to be at the school 30-45 minutes before class starts, remain at school during the entire instructional day, and stay after school 45 minutes to an hour to plan and prepare. On E-Learning days, the teacher candidate will keep the same schedule as the host teacher, this may include, office hours, providing assignments for the classroom student, or grading assignments. If the host teacher is absent, the teacher candidate is still required to report to school and work with the assigned substitute teacher.
School policies vary from school to school. Before beginning field experiences in the school, WGU teacher candidates should become familiar with the school’s physical facilities as well as school policies such as zero tolerance, incident reporting, universal health precautions, and safety regulations and drills. The host teacher or building administrator should help with this orientation to the school. WGU expects teacher candidates to comply with all policies (attendance and otherwise) as required by the cooperating school and school district. Teacher candidates must keep in mind the following key rules and expectations, as well as others brought to their attention by school personnel:
