Educational Leadership (EDL) Practicum Log Requirements

Candidates are enrolled in a six-month or 12-month practicum based on licensing through the assigned state. The 12-month (two full registered terms) and the six-month (one full registered term) practicums are required to take place during the academic school year. This includes requirements related to how the practicum hours and activities are completed and recorded. The practicum courses must be in the final terms of enrollment.

 

Plan to distribute your approved practicum experience and documented hours as follows:   

  • In the description of the activity performed, give details that show the administrative leadership actions you provided for the activity.
  • Practicum activities, coursework, and hours should occur every week and be evenly distributed over each month of the practicum.
  • The majority of your hours must be completed during the regular school day when students and faculty are present.

 

Washington– One Site

  • At least 540 practicum hours for the duration of a full school year.
  • One approved school site.
  • At a minimum, 270 hours of the required must be completed during the regular school day when students and/or staff are present. 
  • A maximum of 100 summer hours may be recorded towards the 540 hours requirement.
  • The practicum does not conclude early if the required hours are logged prior to the accumulation of one academic year.
  • The practicum is two full terms.
  • Activities logged must be a minimum of one-hour.
  • No more than 10% of hours logged are supervision duties.

Missouri – Single Level Site

  • At least 300 practicum hours.
  • One approved school level/site.
  • The practicum does not conclude early if the required hours are logged prior to the accumulation of the 6-month term.
  • Activities logged must be a minimum of one-hour.
  • The practicum courses must not be taken concurrently.
  • The practicum may span one or two terms.
  • No more than 10% of hours logged are supervision duties.

All other states – Elementary, Secondary and District Sites

  • At least 400 hours of practicum hours;
  • Of these 300 hours, work a minimum of 150 hours in an approved elementary school and work a minimum of 150 hours in an approved secondary school during the regular school day. 
  • Activities logged must be a minimum of two-hours.
  • Work a minimum of 32 hours in a school which you are not employed as a teacher, which translates to 4 actual days in concentrated blocks of a minimum of eight hours each during the regular school day and the regular school year. 
  • All candidates must work the remaining 100 hours in a school district office; at the regional or state office; with a Board-approved agency; or in another Board-approved program or school setting. These hours may take place during the school year or as academic summer hours.
  • The practicum may span one or two terms.
  • The practicum does not conclude early if the required hours are logged prior to the accumulation of the 6-month term.
  • No more than 10% of hours logged are supervision duties.

*Massachusetts: The Performance Assessment for Leaders (PAL) must be passed before submitting your Educational Leadership Practicum Log. MA candidates are required to submit their official passing score report with their practicum log. This means candidates should plan to pass the PAL assessment before the end of their last term.
