Praxis or State Required Basic Skills Exam

Before entering the classroom and beginning PCE, you must also pass the basic skills examination required by your state and have notification of the pass posted to your degree plan. This is a WGU requirement, even if you are in a state that does not require a basic skills examination. Some states require the Praxis I and other states have their own basic skills requirements. If your state does not have its own basic skills requirement, you must take and pass the Praxis I basic skills examination.

If you are seeking a master’s degree or a post baccalaureate certificate, you should take the exam before, or immediately upon, enrolling at WGU. If you are a bachelor’s degree student, you should take the exam as soon as you have passed your mathematics and language arts assessments.

Basic skills examinations are external exams. You must register and pay for basic skills exams either with Educational Testing Services (ETS) for Praxis exams or with your state, if your state has its own exams. Please refer to the folder for your state found in the Teacher Licensure Home Page section of the Student Handbook.
