Financial Aid Loan Deferments

WGU students do not normally need to submit individual enrollment verification or loan deferment forms. Instead, WGU automatically verifies students' enrollment status with the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC).

To be reported to the NSC in a timely manner, students must set registration by the 21st day of the first month of their term. Students who fail to set registration by the 21st are reported the following month.

On the 22nd day of each month, a report is sent to the NSC for all students who have set registration. During the following next two weeks the NSC works with lending institutions to update student statuses for loan deferment purposes. Approximately 30 days after term start, the NSC should be updated and lenders notified. If students meet deferment criteria and their lender participates with the NSC, they should automatically be placed into deferment status during the second month of their term.

If a student is not placed into deferment status by the second month of their term, the Student Records department will complete a deferment form at a student’s request. Students must submit a copy of their lender’s deferment form to after completing their portion of the form. Students should send deferment form requests to the Student Records department along with clear instructions supplied by the lending institution on form submission requirements. The Student Records department returns a signed copy of the deferment form to the student’s WGU student email address. If a student provided a fax number for the lender, the Student Records department will also send the deferment form to the lender directly.
