Financial Support Fund

WGU understands that some students may experience unusual financial hardship during their degree programs. To help in these situations, WGU established a scholarship fund for students who are unable to use loans (or whose loans do not cover the full amount of tuition) and have encountered a hardship out of their control which has impacted their ability to pay tuition out of pocket. This scholarship is typically a one-time award with the intention to offer short-term assistance to students that are near the end of their programs.

The value of the scholarship varies (typically between $500-$1,000) and is decided based on circumstances and need of the applicant. It will not cover the full-term tuition costs. Funds are limited, and although students may meet the minimum qualifications to be considered, not every student applying will be awarded; each recipient is selected based on their level of need, progress in their program, and their academic record.

To be eligible for this fund, students must:

  • Not be eligible to use federal loans to pay for tuition or have reached their aggregate loan limit amount which does not cover the full costs of tuition. This scholarship is not intended to be a replacement for student loans.
  • Be enrolled at WGU and have completed at least two terms
  • Have maintained Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) (opens new window) and demonstrate the ability to be a successful WGU student.

To apply for this scholarship, students should complete a scholarship application (opens new window). They will need to complete the General Application, as well as the supplemental Financial Support Fund application. Once completed, the Scholarships team will contact students within 1-2 business days to complete the next steps.
