Steps to Create a Professional Practice Experience (PPE) Resume

The two Professional Practice Experience (PPE) courses are required components of your degree. The following guidelines will assist you in preparing a professionally written resume to provide to potential PPE host sites. These guidelines are designed to help you create a resume that will help the healthcare site learn basic information about you and your background. It is also the facility’s introduction to you as a professional.  

 

STEP 1: Review Resume Guidelines

FORMATTING

  • Use the recommended font size of 11 or 12 font size.  
  • Refrain from using any graphics, photographs, quotations, and references to age, ethnicity or religious affiliations. 
  • If you are a career changer (new to HIM) your resume will be 1 page in length.
  • If you are experienced in the field of HIM (5 years or more) and have relevant experience, a two page resume is acceptable.
  • Please make sure to upload your resume as a MS Word document.

SECTIONS OF YOUR RESUME

  • Contact Information - Include your full name (use bold or a larger font to make sure this stands out). Add in relevant credentials such as RHIA if current. Add your street address, your city, state and zip code, one telephone number and a professional personal email address. Your contact information should take up no more than 3 lines. Create a footer with key contact information on the second page if you have a 2 page resume.
  • Professional Profile -To capture the hiring manager’s attention, highlight your relevant HIM experience, expertise and attributes. Focus on your area of interest in HIM. Include keywords associated with this specialty. The profile should be in paragraph form and between 3-5 statements.
  • Certifications and Training - List all current certifications or IT training
  • Technological Proficiencies - Add any technologies that you are currently proficient in.
  • Education - List the full name of the degree you will have when you graduate from WGU first and list the graduation date as “Anticipated Month Year.” List any older, completed degrees after your WGU degree.
  • Relevant Professional Experience - List your RELATED work experience for the last 10 years in reverse, chronological order. Provide the job titles, name of organization, city, state, (on one line if possible) and the corresponding dates to these experiences in the right margin. Under each position, include 2-4 bullets highlighting what you accomplished in each role beginning each bullet with a strong action verb.
  • Outside Experience - List your non-HIM work experience for the last 10 years in reverse, chronological order. Provide the job titles, name of organization, city, state, (on one line if possible) and the corresponding dates to these experiences in the right margin.
    • Note: If you are a career changer, the key is to focus on your skills and accomplishments that are transferable across industries.
