California NCLEX Registration and RN Licensure Information

This article provides instructions for WGU students registering for the NCLEX-RN and applying for RN licensure in California. Begin these steps when you start the Role Transitions course.

Before Graduation Steps to Register for the NCLEX-RN by Examination in California

Important: new California nursing program graduates - Do not submit your application any sooner than 2-3 weeks prior to your graduation date. Studies show that graduates who take the NCLEX exam shortly after graduation are more likely to pass on their first attempt.

  1. Review state requirements and application instructions: View online at BreEZe application instructions (opens new window).
  2. Apply online for the California RN license by examination via BreEZe (opens new window)
    1. Name: The name on your application must match your ID and WGU degree. You will not be permitted to test if your name does not match.
    2. Name of Registered Nursing Program: A5392 – Western Governors University BSN Program
    3. End Date: Leave blank
    4. Graduation Date: Enter your best estimate
    5. School Address:

    6. Attach passport-sized photo: Passport photos can be taken at CVS, Walgreens, RiteAid, FedEx, UPS, etc.
    7. Attach completed Live Scan background check (opens new window): Live Scan will contact you with instructions to schedule your background check.
    8. Pay the application fee: Due upon submittal
    9. E-mail application receipt to WGU CA Assistant State Director: E-mail receipt to Priscilla Greco,
  3. Register for NCLEX-RN via Pearson VUE (opens new window)
    1. Name: The name on your registration must match your ID. You will not be permitted to test if your name does not match.
    2. School Code: WGU’s California school code is US04501900
    3. School Location: Santa Ana, California
    4. Pay the exam fee: Due upon submittal of registration

After Graduation Steps to Schedule the NCLEX-RN and Obtain Licensure in California

Complete the above steps prior to graduation. Once you have graduated, follow the steps below to schedule your exam and receive your RN license.

  1. Submit WGU Endorsement: Submitted by WGU to the CA Board of Registered Nurses (BRN)
    Once you have graduated, your Program Mentor will send notification to the WGU State Director of Nursing (SDON), who will then submit an endorsement and transcripts to the CA BRN.
  2. Receive Authorization to Test (ATT)
    • E-mailed to you from the CA BRN: The CA BRN will review your application materials once it has received the endorsement from WGU. The CA BRN will then e-mail you an ATT that will allow you to schedule your exam.
    • Send notification of ATT to your Program Mentor and the WGU SDON.
  3. Schedule the NCLEX-RN: Using your ATT, schedule the exam. Your success rate is greater the sooner you take the exam after graduation 
  4. Receive Exam Results: The CA BRN will email your results to you. 
    • If you did not pass, you will receive instructions to register for the exam again.
    • Send notification of passage of the NCLEX to your Program Mentor and the WGU SDON.
  5. Receive RN License: Once you have passed the NCLEX-RN exam, the CA BRN will issue your RN license. Congratulations!
