Indiana NCLEX Registration and RN Licensure Information

This article provides instructions for WGU students registering for the NCLEX-RN and applying for RN licensure in Indiana. Begin these steps when you start the Role Transitions course.



Before Graduation Steps to Register for the NCLEX-RN by Examination in Indiana

You should apply for licensure and exam eligibility no less than two weeks before your anticipated graduation. Studies show that graduates who take the NCLEX exam shortly after graduation are more likely to pass on their first attempt.


  1. Review state requirements and application instructions: Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (opens new window)
  2. Complete the state licensure application form (opens new window):
    1. Name: The name on your application must match your ID and WGU degree. You will not be permitted to test if your name does not match..
    2. School Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
    3. Graduation Date: Enter your best estimate
    4. Pay the application fee: Include the $50 application fee by check or money order, payable to Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (IPLA)
    5. Mail completed application pages 1 and 2 and fee to IPLA:

  3. Obtain a passport-sized photo
    1. Have a passport-sized (2.5” x 3.5”) photo taken with matte finish: Dress professionally. Photos can be taken at CVS, Walgreens, RiteAid, UPS, etc.
    2. Sign across your chest on the photo: Sign the front of your photo across your chest.
    3. Mail photo via standard US mail to the WGU-IN Program Director:

      Note: Dr. Carney will also sign the photo and mail it to IPLA with your Certificate of Completion.

  4. Complete the criminal background check: IPLA will send you instructions to complete the background check after receiving your application materials. Instructions will come from
  5. Register for NCLEX-RN via Pearson VUE (opens new window)
    1. Name: The name on your registration must match your ID. You will not be permitted to test if your name does not match.
    2. School Code: WGU’s Indiana school code is US48500800

    4. Pay the exam fee: Due upon submittal of registration

After Graduation Steps to Schedule the NCLEX-RN and Obtain Licensure in Indiana

Complete the above steps prior to graduation. Once you have graduated, follow the steps below to schedule your exam and receive your RN license.

  1. Submit Certificate of Completion: Submitted by WGU to the IN Professional Licensing Agency (IPLA). Once you have graduated, your Program Mentor will send notification to the WGU Program Director who will then submit a Certificate of Completion and the signed photo to IPLA.
  2. Receive Authorization to Test (ATT): E-mailed to you from Pearson VUE. The IPLA will review your application materials once it has received the Certificate of Completion. IPLA will then notify Pearson VUE, who will email you an ATT that will allow you to schedule your exam.
  3. Schedule the NCLEX-RN: Using your ATT, schedule the exam. Your success rate is greater the sooner you take the exam after graduation.IPLA will email your results. 
  4. Receive Exam Results: If you did not pass, you will receive instructions to register for the exam again.
  5. Receive RN License: Once you have passed the NCLEX-RN exam, IPLA will issue your RN license. Congratulations!
