Prelicensure Nursing Program Assessment and Retake Policy

The WGU Prelicensure Nursing program is dedicated to the goal of ensuring student success in the program and on the NCLEX RN© licensing exam. In support of that goal, students must comply with the following academic support and objective assessment requirements for clinical nursing courses.

  1. Students are required to pass the course preassessment before they are allowed to attempt the course objective assessment.
  2. If students do not pass the preassessment on a second attempt, they are required to attend a meeting with the course mentor, student mentor, program manager and state director of nursing to create a plan for success.
  3. Students must have course mentor approval to take the objective assessment.
  4. Upon failure of the first attempt of the objective assessment:
  • Students are required to attend a joint meeting with their student mentor, course mentor, program manager and/or state director of nursing to discuss remediation activities and plan for success.
  • Students must comply with all academic support and remediation requirements as specified by the student mentor and course mentor.
  • When students demonstrate full completion of all academic support and remediation requirements, they meet with the student mentor and course mentor to discuss readiness for next attempt.
  • The course mentor approves the request for a second attempt on the objective assessment.

5. Upon failure of the second attempt of the objective assessment:

  • Students may appeal for an additional attempt. Students work with their student mentor to submit an appeal to senior leadership for nursing mentoring.
  • If the appeal for a third attempt is granted:
    • Students are required to review their plan for success and attend a meeting with their course mentor, student mentor, program manager and state director of nursing to discuss academic support and remediation requirements.
    • Students are required to review their plan for success and attend a meeting with their course mentor, student mentor, program manager and state director of nursing to discuss academic support and remediation requirements.
    • Students must complete all academic support and remediation requirements.
    • Course mentors approve the request for a third and final attempt on the objective assessment.
  • If the appeal for a third attempt is denied, students are academically dismissed from the WGU Prelicensure Nursing Program. Students will have the option to either change to a WGU degree program that does not contain that assessment or seek educational opportunities outside of WGU.
  • If students are unsuccessful on a third attempt on an objective assessment, they are academically dismissed from the WGU Prelicensure Nursing Program.

6. Students may apply for a third attempt appeal only two times while in the nursing program.

7. Students will be allowed a third attempt on the comprehensive predictor.
