Alabama BA Special Education/ Elementary Education Certification and Exam Requirements

NoteWGU graduates who want to become certified in Alabama must do so through the reciprocity process by first licensing in Utah.  Graduates may apply for a reciprocal license in Alabama after receiving their Utah license. Refer to the following articles for specific state licensure requirements: general Utah teacher certification requirements and general Alabama teacher certification requirements.


Exams completed for Utah certification will be reported to the Alabama State Department of Education as part of the reciprocity licensure application process.  The ALSDE may require additional exams for Alabama licensure at their discretion.

In Alabama, this program leads to a Professional Educator Certificate with endorsements in Collaborative Special Education, Grades K-6  and Grades 6-12, and Elementary Education, Grades K-6.

1) Elementary Education Content Exam: Praxis 5001 Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects

Or, Praxis 5031, Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects if passed prior to 7/1/2015

Or, Praxis 5014, Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects if passed prior to 9/1/2012

You must pass this exam to graduate from this program and be recommended for certification. This exam also satisfies the WGU Program Requirement.


2) Special Education Content ExamPraxis 5543 Special Education: Core Knowledge and Mild to Moderate Applications

You must pass this exam to graduate from this program and be recommended for certification. This exam also satisfies the WGU Program Requirement.
