Arkansas Early Childhood Education Certification and Exam Requirements
WGU students who want to become certified in Arkansas need to first license in Utah after completing their teacher preparation program; a student can then apply for a reciprocal license in AR after receiving their Utah license. Refer to the following for specific state requirements: general Utah teacher certification requirements and general Arkansas teacher certification requirements.
In Arkansas, this program leads to a certification in Early Childhood Education P-4*.
* Note: As of Fall 2013, Arkansas no longer issues the Early Childhood Education P-4 license to most applicants. In-state Arkansas graduates apply for a Blended Special Education/Early Childhood Birth-K license instead. However, the Department of Education will make special considerations for those who apply with an out-of-state K-3 Early Childhood license, such as graduates of WGU who apply with a K-3 Utah license.

Arkansas requires all teachers being licensed in early childhood, elementary, any middle school area, or secondary social studies to complete a three-hour course in Arkansas History before receiving a standard Arkansas teaching license. This coursework is not offered by WGU and must be taken at a local AR college/ university. A one-year, non-renewable provisional teaching license is available for those that haven’t completed the three-hour Arkansas History course. During that year’s time, this course must be taken and passed.
