Note: WGU students who want to become certified in Arkansas need to first license in Utah after completing their teacher preparation program; a student can then apply for a reciprocal license in Arkansas after receiving their Utah license. Refer to the following for specific state requirements: general Utah teacher certification requirements and general Arkansas teacher certification requirements.
In Arkansas, this program leads to a certification in Elementary Education (K-6).*
*Because you are applying in Arkansas with a Utah K-8 Elementary Education license, the Arkansas Department of Education may also issue 4-8 licensure in the areas of English, Social Studies, Math, and Science
1) Content Exam for Initial Utah Certification: Praxis 5001, Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects (OR Praxis 5031 if passed prior to 7/1/2015 OR Praxis II 0014 if pass prior to 9/1/2012).
2) Pedagogy Exam: NES Foundations of Reading
Additional Exams May Be Required After Graduation
When you apply for a reciprocal certificate in Arkansas, you will report your Utah test scores, and the state of Arkansas will either accept these in lieu of the Arkansas requirements or issue a one year provisional teaching license. You will then have one year to take any additional tests deemed necessary.
Arkansas State History Requirement
Arkansas requires all teachers being licensed in early childhood, elementary, any middle school area, or secondary social studies to complete a three-hour course in Arkansas History before receiving a standard Arkansas teaching license. This coursework is not offered by WGU and must be taken at a local Arkansas college/ university. A one-year, non-renewable provisional teaching license is available for those that haven’t completed the three-hour Arkansas History course. During that year’s time, this course must be taken and passed.
