Arizona Background Clearance Information
 
All Arizona IVP background checks must be less than six years old and all USBE background check must be less than five years old to meet WGU requirements. Previously submitted background checks that will be expired by the end date of your Demonstration Teaching (DT) will need to be renewed by the background clearance deadline set for your cohort.

 

REQUIRED BACKGROUND CLEARANCES

ARIZONA

PCE and DT Fingerprint Clearance requirement:

All Arizona Teacher Candidates: You must obtain an Identity Verification Process (IVP) fingerprint clearance card in order to be eligible for field experiences and teacher certification in Arizona. 

 

An outline of this requirement is available on the Arizona Department of Education website. You may request information on how to get a Fingerprint Clearance Card and a fingerprint packet by calling the Arizona Department of Public Safety at (602) 223-2279. Prior to ordering your fingerprint cards, you should review the answers to frequently asked questions regarding the process for obtaining a clearance card, available on the Arizona Department of Public Safety website.

You must provide WGU with a copy of your current IVP fingerprint card before you can participate in field experiences, even if you provide WGU with verification of another type of background check. This background check is considered to be valid for 6 years from the date of clearance, as indicated by the expiration date on the card.

DT and Licensing Clearance Information FOR BA SPECIAL EDUCATION ONLY:

Utah Background Check Instructions:

Arizona BA Special Education Teacher Candidates ONLY: Arizona students in the WGU BA Special Education (BASP) program will be licensed initially in Utah and will need to also complete a background check through the Utah State Board of Education. Click here for instructions on ordering your background clearance from the Utah State Board of Education (USBE).


Note: You must return the packet to the Utah State Board of Education within 30 days of receipt.

Additional Clearance Information:

Additional Clearance Information 
In certain circumstances, even though you have been cleared for demonstration teaching by WGU, the school district in which you are placed for field experiences may have an additional background check requirement that is not required by WGU. Or, the school district may make a different determination regarding a background clearance. You may be required to provide additional documentation to the school district. If so, you are also required to abide by the school district’s decision of approval or denial of the submitted background clearance information.    

School District Clearance

We cannot accept School District Background Clearances for the State of Arizona. You will need to complete the IVP background clearance process through the Department of Public Safety if you are employed with a school district in Arizona.  

Teaching License

We are able to accept teaching licenses for the State of
Arizona for as long as they are valid. This clearance will satisfy the Arizona IVP Department of Public Safety background clearances.

 
WGU CLEARANCE SUBMISSION INFORMATION
ARIZONA- Please upload a copy of your Arizona IVP card of your clearance to your Field Experience student portal, so background clearance specialists can verify your clearance and enter it into your WGU records. 

UTAH-The USBE will notify you via e-mail when you have been cleared.  Please upload the Clearance letter to your Field Experience student portal, so that WGU's Background Clearance Specialists may verify your clearance and enter it in your WGU Records.
