All California background checks or teaching credentials/permits submitted to the WGU certification office for field experience purposes must be valid throughout the duration of your field experiences. You must renew previously submitted background checks or teaching credentials/permits that will expire before the end date of your demonstration teaching/practicum by the background clearance deadline set for your cohort.
PCE AND DT Clearance Information
Students completing field experiences in California must obtain a Certificate of Clearance through the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) or hold an eligible teaching credential/permit that requires a California background check, such as a preliminary or clear credential, 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit, etc. School district background clearance forms are not acceptable for field experiences in California.

Summary of Steps:
1) Complete Live Scan fingerprinting process. For a quick link to the 41-LS form, click here. If you reside outside of California, follow the instructions entitled "For Those Outside California" in Credential Leaflet CL-900. ***Please leave the "supplemental employer" field blank***
2) Apply for Certificate of Clearance document online (separate from Live Scan fingerprint process).
3) You can check on the status of your application for a Certificate of Clearance through this link to the CCTC website. Choose "Public Search". Live Scan fingerprinting process is usually completed within 10 business days.
4) Upload a screen shot of your Certificate of Clearance (or other existing credential/permit) has been issued in your student Field Experience portal under PCE Background Clearance and DT Background Clearance. Background Specialist office will verify your status online.
Note: A Certificate of Clearance is valid for 5 years
In certain circumstances, even though you have been cleared for demonstration teaching by WGU, the school district in which you are placed for field experiences may have an additional background check requirement that is not required by WGU. Or, the school district may make a different determination regarding a background clearance. The school district may require you to provide additional documentation. If so, you must abide by the school district’s decision of approval or denial of the submitted background clearance information.
