California has the following general requirements for all applicants for preliminary teaching credentials who have completed a CCTC-approved teacher certification program:

1. DEGREE REQUIREMENT: Graduation from a Bachelor's degree or more advanced degree program at a regionally accredited institution.

2. PROGRAM REQUIREMENT:  Completion of a CCTC-approved teacher preparation program.

3. BACKGROUND CLEARANCE:  Completion of the required background check resulting in receipt of a Certificate of Clearance from the CCTC.

4. BASIC SKILLS REQUIREMENT:  Meet the CA basic skills requirement.

5. CONTENT EXAM REQUIREMENT:  Verify subject matter competence by passing the relevant CSET exams. Please note that WGU's approval with CCTC requires that all WGU students in an initial teacher licensure preparation program who are seeking teacher certification in CA must pass the CSET exams prior to demonstration teaching and passing scores for all required CSET exams must be posted to your degree plan before you are allowed to begin demonstration teaching.

Note: CSET exams are not required for students enrolled in the BA/MS Special Education or MAT English program.

6. RICA REQUIREMENT: Passing scores on the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA) (Multiple subject credential candidates only. CA BASP students do not take the RICA).

7. SPECIAL EDUCATION CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENT: BASP and MSSP students intending to credential in California must first license in Utah and then apply via reciprocity for their California credential(s).

8. MAT ENGLISH CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENT: MAT English students intending to credential in California must first license in Utah and then apply via reciprocity for their California credential(s).

9. edTPA REQUIREMENT (Teaching Performance Assessments):
Beginning with the Fall 2017 demonstration teaching cohort, all California students will complete the edTPA assessment as part of their demonstration teaching. For more information on edTPA requirements, click here.

10. COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENT: Completion of foundational computer technology coursework and Developing English Language Skills coursework. Please note that this coursework is part of your WGU teacher preparation program.

11. U.S. CONSTITUTION REQUIREMENT: Completion of a course (at least two semester units or three quarter units) in the provisions and principles of the U.S. Constitution, or passing an exam on the provisions and principles of the US Constitution given by a regionally accredited college or university.

Note: Bachelor's programs at WGU provide such a course, but only if this course was not waived as part your transcript evaluation during the enrollment process. Post-baccalaureate and MA in Teaching programs at WGU do not contain this course.

If you are enrolled in a Post-bacc* or MAT* program, or if your U.S. Constitution course from a B.A. program was waived, then you must provide licensure@wgu.edu with either the official description of the course on your undergraduate transcripts that fulfills this requirement or with the passing scores on an appropriate exam offered by a local CA college or university.

Note: Because students enrolled in the WGU BA Special Education and MAT English programs apply for their California credential via reciprocity through Utah, students in these programs are not required to satisfy California's U.S. Constitution requirement.

12. CPR Requirement: Training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation that meets the standards established by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross. You must provide licensure@wgu.edu with evidence of the completion of a CPR course.
