CA Special Education and MAT English Teaching Credential Application Information and Instructions

 
Note: To be eligible for recommendation by the Certification Office, students completing a Bachelor or Master of Special Education must graduate and have their degree posted to their WGU transcript.

Initial Utah License Required: Graduates of a WGU Special Education or the MAT English program who want to receive a need to first license in Utah and then apply for a reciprocal license in California by following the steps below.

Step 1: Follow the instructions to apply for initial teacher certification in Utah available at UT Teacher Certification Application Information and Instructions. This includes completing a USOE background check. WGU and the USOE must have copies of your exam scores on file. Submit your exam scores to WGU and the Utah State Office of Education.

Step 2: Satisfy California's background check requirement.

Step 3: Obtain official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Two copies of your final WGU transcript will be sent to you along with your diploma upon graduation. If you would like to order additional transcripts, see How to Order Official WGU Transcripts. Do not request a transcript until you have received notice of graduation, so that your graduation date will appear on your transcript. Be sure to leave your transcripts in the sealed envelopes to be included with your application packet.

Step 4A - Special Education: Bachelor of Arts, Special Education - If you completed the BASP (dual Elementary/Special Education) program, you must complete two copies of the 41-4 credential application form.  Complete one application for the Preliminary Multiple Subject Credential and a second application for the Level 1 Education Specialist Instruction Mild/Moderate K-12 Credential on a separate 41-4 application form. The two forms may be mailed together. Be sure to include fee payment for both applications if submitting two application forms.

 

Master of Science, Special Education - Download and complete the 41-4 credential application form to apply for your Level 1 Education Specialist Instruction Mild/Moderate K-12 credential based on completion of an out-of-state program.

Step 4B - MAT English: Download and complete the 41-4 credential application form to apply for your Preliminary Single Subject English credential based on completion of an out-of-state program. Be sure to include fee payment.

Step 5: Compile all application documents:


1. Application form(s)
2. Official transcript(s)
3. Copy of your Utah teaching certificate
4. Official score report verifying completion of the basic skills requirement (for initial licensure applicants only)
5. Application fee(s) in the form of a check or money order made payable to the Commission on Teacher Credentialing

 

Step 6: Mail all application materials together in one package to:
