CNMI Background Clearance Information

Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Background Clearance Information

Background clearances are considered valid by the USBE for three years from the date of clearance. Any USBE background clearance that will expire prior to the end date of your Demonstration Teaching will need to be redone by the background clearance deadline set for your cohort

You will need to complete 2 clearances for WGU; one for Northern Mariana Islands and one for Utah.

Prior to beginning PCE, students must complete a criminal background check.  Since all WGU students who want to be certified in the CNMI must first be certified in Utah, you need to complete an FBI national background check through the Utah State Board of Education. To request information and a fingerprint packet, go to the USBE Background Check Website and select "initial licensure" as the purpose of the check.  You must return the packet to the Utah State Board of Education within 30 days of receipt, or else your payment will be forfeited.  This background check takes 12-16 weeks to be processed by the FBI.

Be advised that the Utah State Board of Education will be informed of any arrests and charges that occur after your background clearance is issued, and may revoke your background clearance if deemed necessary.  You cannot be recommended for licensure in Utah if you have a revoked background clearance, and you must work directly with the USBE to reinstate your clearance if it has been revoked.

For Northern Mariana Islands , you need to go to your local police station and request a fingerprint check for PERSONAL reasons.  Fax a copy of the results to 801-401-7961 when they come in.

WGU students who are currently employed in a school district and completed a recent background check may have the option of submitting their school district clearance to WGU. Please see the School District Background Clearance article in this handbook for more information.

Upload your background check results in your student Field Experience portal under PCE Background Clearance and/or DT Background Clearance.

Note that you will be required to complete an additional background check(s) for the CNMI when applying for teacher certification. Please see the CNMI Teacher Certification Application Information article for further details.

In certain circumstances, even though you have been cleared for demonstration teaching by WGU, the school district in which you are placed for field experiences may have an additional background check requirement that is not required by WGU. Or, the school district may make a different determination regarding a background clearance. You may be required to provide additional documentation to the school district. If so, you are also required to abide by the school district’s decision of approval or denial of the submitted background clearance information.
