CNMI Early Childhood Certification and Exam Requirements

Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Early Childhood Education Certification and Exam Requirements

WGU students who want to become certified in the CNMI need to first license in Utah after completing their teacher preparation program; a student can then apply for a reciprocal license in the CNMI after receiving their Utah license. Refer to the following for specific state requirements: general Utah teacher certification requirements and general CNMI teacher certification requirements.


Early Childhood Education Certification Available: Early Childhood, Ages 3-5 

Graduates of a WGU early childhood education teacher preparation program will be eligible for Early Childhood, Ages 3-5 teacher certification in the CNMI, which will allow them to teach in any multiple subject classroom in this grade range.
Early Childhood Education Exams and Requirements

Content Exam for initial UT certification: Praxis II 5022, Early Childhood or Praxis II 5001, Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects
Content Exams for CNMI certification: Praxis II 5020, Early Childhood Education
Pedagogy Exam for CNMI certification: Praxis 5621, Principles of Learning & Teaching (PLT) - Early Childhood

WGU ECE Program Requirement (for students who matriculated on March 1, 2012 or later. See the WGU Program Requirement for the Early Childhood Education program)

You have four options to satisfy the WGU Program Requirement.  You may pass any of these four exams:

1.     Praxis II 5001, Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects
2.     Praxis II 5018, Elementary Education: Content Knowledge
3.     Praxis II 5014, Elementary Education: Content Knowledge
4.     Praxis II 5031, Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects

WGU students who want to become certified teachers in the CNMI need to first license in Utah after completing their teacher preparation program; they can then apply for a reciprocal license in CNMI after receiving their Utah license.  You will need to take the PRAXIS exam required for initial UT licensure in early childhood education and the required exams for licensure in the CNMI, as well as meet all other general Utah teacher certification requirements and  general CNMI teacher certification requirements.  


Before registering for the Praxis II exams, be sure to review WGU's general policies regarding external certification exams. Exam registration is available through the ETS website at  The ETS website will provide the test dates available.
