CO Certification Requirements and Available Licenses



Early Childhood Education (Ages Birth-8)

Elementary Education (Grades K-6)

Special Education Generalist (Ages 5-21)

Middle School Mathematics (Grades 6-8)

Social Studies (Grades 7-12)

Secondary Mathematics (Grades 7-12)

Science (Grades 7-12)

English Language Arts (Grades 7-12)

Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education (Grades K-12)


Colorado has the following requirements for all applicants for initial teacher certification:

1. DEGREE REQUIREMENT: Possession of a Bachelor's degree or higher granted by a regionally accredited institution of higher education.

2. PROGRAM REQUIREMENT: Completion of a regionally accredited teacher preparation program that is approved to lead to teacher certification in the home-state of the program.

3. BACKGROUND CLEARANCE: Background clearance resulting from completion of the required background check.

4. EXAM REQUIREMENTS: Passage of the Colorado Department of Education's required content exams.
