CO MS Special Education Certification and Exam Requirements


In Colorado, this program leads to Special Education Generalist (Ages 5-21) endorsement.

1) WGU Program Requirement: Praxis 5543, Special Education: Core Knowledge and Mild to Moderate ApplicationsIf you matriculated after 9/1/2011, you must pass this exam to graduate and be recommended for the endorsement. 


2) Special Education Content Exam: Praxis 5354, Special Education: Core Knowledge and Applications.

This exam is not required for graduation, but is required in before you can be recommended for the endorsement.

  • OR, If passed between 9/1/2008 and 5/6/2017, PLACE (20) Special Education Generalist. Passing scores for this exam will be accepted until 5/6/22.


3) Elementary Education Content Exam:  Praxis 5001, Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects.

  • OR, if passed by 5/6/2017, PLACE (01) Elementary Education. Passing scores will be accepted for 5 years until 5/6/2022.
  • OR, if taken between 9/1/2014 and 8/31/2016, Praxis 5018, Elementary Education: Content Knowledge. Passing scores are accepted until 8/31/21.
  • This exam is not required for graduation and is not required if you are adding the Special Education Generalist endorsement to an active Colorado Elementary Education teaching license. However, if you do not hold an active Elementary Education license, then you must satisfy this exam requirement before receiving a full 3-year Special Education Generalist endorsement. You may still apply for the Special Education Generalist endorsement without having completed the Elementary Education content exam. However, you will be issued a 1-year interim authorization, during which time you must pass the current Praxis 5001 Elementary Education content exam. You may teach in a Special Education classroom during the 1-year interim authorization period. Upon passing the Elementary Education content exam, you may submit a new application to the Colorado DoE (with an additional application fee) to upgrade your 1-year interim authorization to a full 3-year Special Education Generalist endorsement.
