Connecticut Background Clearance Information

Note: Connecticut students are required to follow separate processes to obtain two different background clearances - one for Preclinical Experiences (PCE) and one for Demonstration Teaching (DT).
Connecticut Background Check Instructions
For PCE, a local Connecticut background check is needed. For DT, students will need to complete an FBI background check.
1) PCE CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS
Prior to PCE, a student must complete a background check through the Connecticut State Police Bureau of Identification at least 30 days prior to being placed in a school.
To complete your background check, complete the Criminal History Record Request Form. Obtain a fingerprint card from a local police station (additional fees may apply). Submit the fingerprint card and Criminal History Record Request Form, along with a check or money order of the personal record search amount to:

Have the background check sent to you, and upload your background check results in your student Field Experience portal under PCE background clearance and DT Background Clearance.
Effective January 1, 2019, the federal criminal history record search rate for the general public will increase from $12.00 to $13.25 and for volunteers will increase from $10.75 to $11.25.
2) DT CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS
Prior to demonstration teaching, students in Connecticut are required to obtain an FBI background clearance.
FBI Background Check Instructions:
1) Order a background check from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) by following these instructions.
2) Have the background check results sent to you, and upload your background check results in your student Field Experience portal under PCE background clearance and DT Background Clearance.
School District Background Clearance Option:
WGU students who are currently employed in a school district and completed a recent background check may have the option of submitting their school district clearance to WGU to satisfy the Connecticut background clearance requirement. Please see the School District Background Clearance Article in this handbook for more information.
For students enrolled in an Elementary Education or Bachelor of Arts in Special Education program, the School District Background Clearance form will only satisfy the Connecticut background check requirement and not the Utah background check requirement.
Note: Background clearances are considered valid by the USBE for three years from the date of clearance. Any USBE background clearance that will expire prior to the end date of your Demonstration Teaching will need to be redone by the background clearance deadline set for your cohort. Connecticut background clearances expire after two years.

Additional Clearance Information:
In certain circumstances, even though you have been cleared for demonstration teaching by WGU, the school district in which you are placed for field experiences may have an additional background check requirement that is not required by WGU. Or, the school district may make a different determination regarding a background clearance. You may be required to provide additional documentation to the school district. If so, you are also required to abide by the school district’s decision of approval or denial of the submitted background clearance information.
