Background Clearance Information for Students doing PCE or DT in Overseas Department of Defense Schools
Background checks submitted to the WGU certification office must be less than two years old to meet WGU requirements. Previously submitted background checks that will be over two years old by the end date of your Demonstration Teaching will need to be renewed by the background clearance deadline set for your cohort.
PCE AND DT FINGERPRINT CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Prior to field experiences (preclinical experiences or demonstration teaching), you must complete two different background checks – (a) a Federal Bureau of Investigation background check and (b) a National Criminal Background Check and Sex Offender Check.
Note: a DoDEA employee may not need to complete the National Criminal Background Check and Sex Offender Check, please contact your placement coordinator to request the memorandum for the Welfare Check.
FOR STUDENTS LICENSING IN UTAH:
A valid USBE clearance is required to obtain a Utah teaching license. If you are planning to license in Utah, you should complete a Utah background check through the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) rather than following the above FBI background check instructions. Click here for instructions on ordering your background clearance from the Utah State Board of Education (USBE).
BACKGROUND CLEARANCE SUBMISSION DEADLINE:
In order to meet eligibility requirements for demonstration teaching at a DoD school overseas, your WGU required background check must be received by WGU's Licensure Office no later than:
ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND CHECKS:
In certain circumstances, even though you have been cleared for demonstration teaching by WGU, the school district in which you are placed for field experiences may have an additional background check requirement that is not required by WGU. Or, the school district may make a different determination regarding a background clearance. You may be required to provide additional documentation to the school district. If so, you are also required to abide by the school district’s decision of approval or denial of the submitted background clearance information.
Background questions please contact WGU Background Specialists at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 866-889-0132 option 3.
