Florida Background Clearance Information

Prior to Preclinical Experiences (PCE) you must complete a state background check through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and an FBI background check, which will be completed at the school district where you will complete DT.  Florida background checks submitted to the WGU background specialists must be less than two years old to meet WGU requirements. Previously submitted background checks that will be over two years old by the end date of your demonstration teaching (DT) or practicum will need to be renewed by the background clearance deadline set for your cohort.

 

Whenever possible, it is best for you to submit a cleared Florida school district background clearance for the district in which you will complete DT. If you are currently employed by a school district and/or have been previously fingerprinted, please have your HR Office complete the District Clearance form (see the School District Background Clearance article in this handbook) or forward any correspondence you have from the district stating that you have been fingerprinted and the date that the process was completed.  A cleared Florida school district background clearance meets both the FDLE (state) and FBI (federal) requirements for PCE and DT for that school district.

 

If you are not currently employed at a school district, you can request a state background check through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. You can request the background check either online or through the mail. To request a background check online, go to the FDLE Criminal History Information website here and follow the prompts. Click on the button that says “START YOUR SEARCH NOW.” You do not need to request the certified version. You can also call the FDLE at 850-410-8109 for more information.

If you have submitted your FDLE (state) clearance, but not a school district clearance, then you will be required to complete another background check through the Florida school district in which you have been placed prior to Demonstration Teaching to meet Florida’s requirements. Please contact the school district to ask more information about the fingerprinting process.

Please note, in certain circumstances, even though you have been cleared for demonstration teaching by WGU, the school district in which you are placed for field experiences may have an additional background check requirement that is not required by WGU. Or, the school district may make a different determination regarding a background clearance. You may be required to provide additional documentation to the school district. If so, you are also required to abide by the school district’s decision of approval or denial of the submitted background clearance information.
