General Florida Teacher Certification Requirements



PreKindergarten/Primary Education Age 3 to Grade 3 

Elementary Education K-6

Exceptional Student Education K-12 

Middle Grades Mathematics 5-9 

Middle Grades General Science 5-9 

Social Science (Broad Field), Grades 6-12

Mathematics, Grades 6-12 

Biology, Grades 6-12 

Chemistry, Grades 6-12 

Earth and Space Science, Grades 6-12 

Physics, Grades 6-12 

Secondary English, Grades 6-12  

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL; grades K-12) 

Educational Leadership 

Florida has the following general requirements for all applicants for professional teacher certification:

1. DEGREE REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from a Bachelor's degree program at a regionally accredited college or university.

2. PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS: Completion of a state-approved teacher education program offered by a regionally accredited post-secondary institution with a major course of study in the same subject area of the Florida license being sought. 3. EXAM REQUIREMENTS: Passing scores on the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations in the area of general knowledge (basic skills), as well as subject area knowledge (content) and professional preparation (pedagogy).

4. BACKGROUND CLEARANCE: To be issued a temporary or professional Florida Certificate, you must be employed in either a public or nonpublic school and clear a background check processed by the employing school system.
