All background checks submitted to the WGU Background Clearance Specialists must be less than two years old to meet WGU requirements. Previously submitted background checks that will be over two years old by the end date of your demonstration teaching will need to be renewed by the background clearance deadline set for your cohort.
Note: The information in this article is for WGU students enrolled in an advanced program in Georgia (i.e. students seeking a certificate upgrade). Students enrolled in an initial program in Georgia, as well as students who do not have a professional-level Georgia teaching license, must follow the instructions for obtaining a Pre-Service Certificate and background check here.
FINGERPRINT CLEARANCE REQUIREMENT FOR ADVANCED PROGRAMS:
Prior to completing field experiences in Georgia, you need to request a criminal history record check on yourself at your local sheriff's office or police department. You are the requester, not WGU; request a background check for your own personal review. For more information on background checks, please contact the Georgia Bureau of Investigation at 404-244-2639, option 2 or access their website. The Georgia Felon Search linked on the Georgia Bureau of Investigation website will not satisfy the background check requirement.
WGU students who are currently employed in a school district and completed a recent fingerprint-based background check may have the option of submitting their school district clearance to WGU. Please see the School District Background Clearance article in this handbook for more information.
FBI CLEARANCE INFORMATION:
If you have lived in states other than Georgia after age 18, you must obtain and submit a background check as described below:
ADDITIONAL CLEARANCE INFORMATION:
In certain circumstances, even though you have been cleared for demonstration teaching by WGU, the school district in which you are placed for field experiences may have an additional background check requirement that is not required by WGU. Or, the school district may make a different determination regarding a background clearance. You may be required to provide additional documentation to the school district. If so, you are also required to abide by the school district’s decision of approval or denial of the submitted background clearance information.
Background questions please contact WGU Background Specialists at email@example.com or call 866-889-0132 option 3.
