Hawaii Basic Skills Requirement

 

Basic Skills Exam: Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators: Combined Test (5751)
Or, if passed prior to 6/30/2014, **Praxis I: Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST).  


Hawaii requires the Core basic skills examination in reading, writing, and mathematics for initial licensure. You can find the minimum score requirements here. You are required to pass all three sections of the Core academic skills examination within the first 6 months of entering the Foundations of Teaching (FOT) domain at WGU. You should sign up to take your basic skills examination when you begin studying Foundations of Teaching to ensure you have time to complete the examination prior to enrollment in Effective Teaching Practices. 

 

Alternate Basic Skills Options

The following is a list of alternate exams that may be used by WGU students licensing in Hawaii to meet the basic skills requirement: 

 

SAT: Qualifying scores on SAT Reading, Mathematics, and Writing sections. 

  • Prior to March 2016, you must have  one of the following: a minimum score of 560 in Mathematics and a minimum score of 530 in Reading. The Praxis test score for Writing can be used if you took the SAT prior to March 2016.  This is the only acceptable mix-and-match possibility in Hawaii. 
  • Beginning March 2016, You must have a minimum score of 580 in MAthematics, 520 in Writing, and 540 in Evidence Based Reading and Writing.

ACT: Qualifying scores on ACT Reading, Mathematics, and Writing sections

  • You must obtain a minimum score of 19 in Mathematics, 18 in Reading, 6 in Writing or 22 in Reading/Writing. There is no mixing and matching between the Praxis Core and ACT sub-tests.
