IA Secondary Mathematics Certification and Exam Requirements

Iowa Mathematics Certification and Exam Requirements

Obtaining an initial Utah license is required to apply for an exchange license in Iowa via the Reciprocity Pathway.

In Iowa, this program leads to an Initial License in Mathematics (5-12)

Important Note Regarding Field Experiences and Licensure

1. Content Exam: Praxis 5161, Mathematics: Content Knowledge

You must pass this exam to graduate from this program and be recommended for certification.

This exam meets the Iowa and Utah content exam requirement as well as the WGU Program Requirement

2. Pedagogy Exam : Praxis 5624, Principles of Learning and Teaching 7-12

*Note: If you completed edTPA during the demonstration teaching portion of your WGU teacher preparation program, then you do not need to pass Praxis 5624. If you did not complete edTPA, then you will need to pass Praxis 5624 to be eligible for licensure recommendation in Iowa.

 Additional Coursework Required

Iowa requires a course in computer programming for the secondary mathematics standard license. WGU programs do not include this coursework. If you have not completed a course in computer programming prior to enrolling at WGU, Iowa will issue a Regional Exchange license which will allow you to teach for a year while you complete this course at an Iowa institution.
