IL Background Clearance Information

Illinois Background Clearance Information

  • Students in initial teacher preparation programs (i.e. BA, PB and MAT programs) need to submit two clearances to WGU: one for Illinois and one for Utah.
  • Students in endorsement programs (Master of Science in Special Education and English Language Learning programs) do not need to complete a background check for Utah.

Illinois Clearance Instructions:
1) Visit the Illinois State Police Criminal History Information website and click the link to Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation Licensed Live Scan Fingerprint Vendor L...

2) The Illinois State Police requires that you must submit your fingerprints electronically, so you must make an appointment to go to one of the background check locations to submit your fingerprints in person.  When ordering, you need to request a background check for the purpose of personal review so that the results are sent directly to you. Results cannot be submitted directly to WGU; they must go to you first. For more information, contact the Illinois State Police Bureau of Identification at (815) 740-5160.
3) List yourself as the recipient of the background clearance, and upload your background check results in your student Field Experience portal under PCE Background Clearance and/or DT Background Clearance.

Alternate Illinois Clearance Option for School Employees: If you work for a school who completed a fingerprint-based background check on you less than five years ago, you may wish to submit a completed School District Background Clearance form as described in the School District Background Clearance Article.

Additional Clearance Information:
In certain circumstances, even though you have been cleared for demonstration teaching by WGU, the school district in which you are placed for field experiences may have an additional background check requirement that is not required by WGU. Or, the school district may make a different determination regarding a background clearance. You may be required to provide additional documentation to the school district. If so, you are also required to abide by the school district’s decision of approval or denial of the submitted background clearance information.

Background questions please contact WGU Background Specialists at  or call 866-889-0132 option 3.
