Kansas Background Clearance Information
Background clearances are considered valid by the USBE for three years from the date of clearance. Kansas background checks are valid for two years from the date of clearance. Any background clearance that will expire prior to the end date of your Demonstration Teaching will need to be redone by the background clearance deadline set for your cohort.
PCE AND DT FINGERPRINT CLEARANCE REQUIREMENT
You will need to submit 2 background clearances to WGU; one for Utah and one for Kansas.
Utah Background Check Instructions:
Click here for instructions on ordering your background clearance from the Utah State Board of Education (USBE).
Kansas Background Check Instructions:
For Kansas, you need to complete an online record check on yourself through the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. Upload your background check results in your student Field Experience portal under PCE Background Clearance and/or DT Background Clearance.
School District Background Clearance Option:
WGU students who are currently employed in a school district and completed a recent background check may have the option of submitting their school district clearance to WGU. Please see the School District Background Clearance article in this handbook for more information.
Student Teaching Permits (Kansas Student Teacher Certificate Required Prior to DT):
Immediately after your demonstration teaching placement is finalized (including district, school, and grade level), you must obtain a Student Teaching Certificate. To do so, contact your email@example.com, and they will begin the process. A copy will be sent to you, the Kansas State Department of Education, Teacher Licensure and Accreditation, Landon State Office Building, 900 SW Jackson, Suite 106, Topeka, KS 66612. You will also need to provide a copy to your principal or building administrator.
More information on student teaching certificates can be found in sections 91-19-2 of Kansas certification rules.
Additional Clearance Information:
In certain circumstances, even though you have been cleared for demonstration teaching by WGU, the school district in which you are placed for field experiences may have an additional background check requirement that is not required by WGU. Or, the school district may make a different determination regarding a background clearance. You may be required to provide additional documentation to the school district. If so, you are also required to abide by the school district’s decision of approval or denial of the submitted background clearance information.
Background questions please contact WGU Background Specialists at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 866-889-0132 option 5.
