Kentucky has the following general requirements for all applicants for initial teacher certification:

1. DEGREE REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from a bachelor's or higher degree program with a GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale, or a GPA of 3.00 on a 4.0 scale on the last sixty (60) hours of undergraduate and graduate credit completed.

2. PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS: Completion of a teacher education program at a regionally and NCATE/CAEP accredited college/university that is state-approved to lead to teacher certification in the home-state of the program.

3. EXAM REQUIREMENTS: Passing scores on all of the required Praxis content and pedagogy exams. All Praxis exams must be less than five years old at the time of application for licensure.

4. RECENCY OF STUDY: Recency of study, meaning the teacher candidate must have completed their teacher education program or six additional hours of graduate coursework no more than five years before applying for certification.

Once the above requirements have been met, a Limited One Year Eligibility Certificate may be issued. During the first year of employment, the educator must then complete the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program (KTIP) in order to become eligible for standard five-year certification.
