How to Add an Additional Endorsement

MA Mathematics Education (MAME)

and

MA Science Education (MASE)

A) Adding an Endorsement at the Same Grade Level (Secondary > Secondary)

To add a new secondary field to your existing secondary Massachusetts license, you must pass the appropriate MTEL content exam. You may submit your application online.

B) Adding an Endorsement at a New Grade Level (Elementary > Secondary)

Those who would like to add a new teaching field at a different level (e.g. elementary teacher who wants to teach in a secondary subject) must complete coursework at the new developmental level or a 150 hour practicum/ internship in the new level/area. This is in addition to passing the appropriate MTEL content exam. WGU cannot guarantee that Massachusetts will accept coursework from WGU to satisfy this requirement, so Elementary Teachers must complete 150 clock hours as part of their Teacher Work Sample at the end of their program. A practicum log must be included with the submission of their Teacher Work Sample. For additional information on these requirements for adding specific licensure areas, please see the Licensure Help section of the MA Department of Education website.

MS Special Education (MSSP)

You may add Special Education (Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities) to your license after completing WGU’s Master of Special Education program.  MA requires a practicum of at least 150 hours to add this field to your existing license (WGU’s program includes a 240 hour practicum).

To apply to add a teaching field after completing a WGU endorsement preparation program, follow the instructions in the Massachusetts Certification Application Information article in this handbook. You will be applying for a new field on the same type of license that you currently have (i.e. preliminary, initial, or professional).

English Language Learning (ENDELL, MAELL)

You may add English as a Second Language to your certificate after completing WGU's Endorsement program because it includes a practicum which must be completed in the role of the license sought in an appropriate classroom.

To apply to add a teaching field after completing a WGU endorsement preparation program, follow the instructions in the Massachusetts Certification Application Information article in this handbook. You will be applying for a new field on the same type of license that you currently have (i.e. preliminary, initial, or professional).
