Early Childhood: Teachers of Students With and Without Disabilities, PreK-2

Elementary Education, Grades 1-6

Moderate Disabilities, PreK-8 or 5-12

Middle School Mathematics, Grades 5-8

Middle School General Science, Grades 5-8

Secondary History, Grades 5-12

Social Science, 5-12

Secondary Mathematics, Grades 8-12

Secondary Biology, Grades 8-12

Secondary Chemistry, Grades 8-12

Secondary Earth and Space Science, Grades 8-12

Secondary Physics, Grades 8-12

Secondary English, Grades 8-12

English as a Second Language (ESL), Grades PreK-6 or 5-12

Principal/Assistant School Principal, PreK-6 or 5-8 or 9-12

Massachusetts has the following general requirements for all applicants for initial teacher certification who have completed an out-of-state teacher preparation program:

DEGREE: Graduation from a Bachelor's degree program.

2. PROGRAM: Completion of a teacher education program that is approved to lead to teacher certification in the home-state of the program and recommendation for certification from the approved program.  

3. BASIC SKILLS: Passing scores on the Communication and Literacy Skills Test.

4. CONTENT EXAM: Passing scores on the required subject matter knowledge exam for the certification area sought.

5. SHELTERED ENGLISH IMMERSION TEACHER ENDORSEMENT: Graduates of WGU teacher preparation programs will be eligible for 5-year Preliminary certification in Massachusetts.  Educators must obtain the Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) endorsement in order to be eligible for an Initial teaching certification.  To be eligible for the Sheltered English Immersion endorsement, you must pass the MTEL Sheltered English Immersion (56) exam.
