Massachusetts MS Special Education Credential and Exam Requirements

In Massachusetts, this program leads to a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities, Grades Pk-8 and 5-12 endorsement.

Content Exam for Pk-8 Certification: MTEL General Curriculum (03)

You must pass this exam to be recommended for a Special Education Pk-8 certification. 

Content Exam for 5-12 Certification: Pass a subject matter test in one of the core academic subjects taught in 5-8 or 8-12 (this has usually been completed for your initial license).

Pedagogy Exam: MTEL Foundations of Reading (90)

This must be passed to be recommended for certification in Massachusetts. In some cases, you may have taken this exam to obtain your initial teaching license if it is Elementary Education or Early Childhood Education.

WGU Program Requirement: Praxis 5543, Special Education: Core Knowledge and Mild to Moderate Applications

If you matriculated after 9/1/2011, you must pass this exam to graduate from the program and be recommended for certification.
