Massachusetts Master of Arts in Science Education (MASE) Certification and Exam Requirements


Graduates of a MAME or MASE program may apply for additional teaching fields at the same level through appropriate subject matter knowledge test(s) of the MTEL. This path allows you to add a teaching field by passing the applicable MTEL exam.  Those who would like to add a new teaching field at a different level (e.g. elementary teacher who wants to teach in middle school) must also complete coursework at the new developmental level or an 150 hour practicum/ internship in the new level/area.

In Massachusetts, WGU's Master of Arts in Science Education Middle Grades program leads to an endorsement in General Science 5-8


1) Content Exam: MTEL General Science (10)

You must pass this exam in order to be recommended for certification.

2) WGU Program RequirementPraxis 5440, Middle School Science 

You must pass this exam, or a WGU Program Requirement exam previously accepted for the Middle Grades Science program, in order to graduate from this program and be recommended for certification.

Physics 8-12
