ME Adding an Endorsement to Teaching Certificate

Adding an Endorsement to a Maine Teaching Certificate

Note:  While we do our best to give you accurate and up to date information about your state requirements, we are not infallible.  State requirements change frequently.  It is your responsibility, and in your best interest, to double check certification and licensure requirements with your state’s Department of Education.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Maine educators may apply for additional teaching endorsements by completing a state-approved teacher preparation program in the new teaching area or by completing prescribed coursework and field experiences. Conditional certification in an endorsement area is available to those who have completed 24 credits in the endorsement area but have not fulfilled other requirements. For details on requirements for specific endorsements, see the rules of the Maine Department of Education, chapter 115, section II.

How to Add an Additional Endorsement

MA Mathematics Education (MAME)

MA Science Education (MASE)

Endorsements may be added after completing WGU’s state-approved programs and passing the appropriate exams for each license. After you graduate from your WGU program, follow the instructions in the Maine Certification Application article of this handbook.

Normally, Maine requires 15 weeks of student teaching to add endorsements. However, this requirement is waived if you apply a conditional certificate when you graduate and obtain one year of teaching experience in a secondary classroom under your conditional certificate. After you complete one year of teaching, you may then apply for the standard certificate for your endorsement.
