Maine BA Special Education/ Elementary Education Certification and Exam Requirements

In Maine, this program leads to a Conditional Certificate in General Elementary K-8 and Teacher of Students with Disabilities K-8 and 7-12

* Beginning 7/1/19, the grade range for this license will change to General Elementary K-6 and Teacher of Students with Disabilities K-8 and 7-12.


1) Elementary Content Exam: Praxis 5001, Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects

You must pass this exam to graduate from your program and be recommended for certification
Previous Exam Requirement: As of August 1, 2015, the Praxis 5001 has replaced the Praxis 5031 exam.  Applicants who obtained a passing score on the Praxis 5031 must apply for certification by August 31, 2020. 


2) Special Education Content Exam: Praxis 5354 Special Education: Core Knowledge and Applications

You must pass this exam to graduate from your program and be recommended for certification
 (Or, if passed prior to 9/1/2010: Praxis II 0353, Education of Exceptional Students: Core Content Knowledge)

3) Pedagogy ExamPraxis 5622, Principals of Learning and Teaching K-6

You must pass this exam to be recommended for certification

4) WGU Program Required Exam
: Praxis 5543, Special Education: Core Knowledge and Mild to Moderate Applications

You must pass this exam to graduate from your program and be recommended for certification

(for students who matriculated on 9/1/2011 or after)


DEMONSTRATION TEACHING REQUIREMENT
16 weeks divided between elementary and special education, as determined by WGU
