Maine has the following general requirements for all applicants for initial teacher certification who have completed an out-of-state teacher preparation program:

1. DEGREE: Graduation from a Bachelor's degree program offered by a regionally accredited college or university.

2. PROGRAM Completion of a teacher education program that is approved to lead to teacher certification in the home-state of the program and recommendation for certification from the approved program.

3. BACKGROUND CHECK: Background clearance resulting from completion of the required background check.

4. EXCEPTIONAL STUDENTS COURSE: Completion of a course that covers the teaching of exceptional students in the regular classroom: "Teaching exceptional students in the regular classroom” means study approved by the Department in accordance with criteria set forth by the Department that emphasizes the education of exceptional students in regular public school programs with the addition of supportive assistance or the modification of teaching methods and instructional materials." This requirement is covered by the WGU teacher preparation coursework, with the exception of the Educational Leadership program.

5. CONTENT COURSEWORK: Meet the content coursework requirements for the particular area of certification sought, as outlined in the Chapter 115, Section II of the Department of Education rules.

6. BASIC SKILLS EXAM: Passing scores on the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators: Combined Test (5751).

7. CONTENT AND PEDAGOGY EXAMS: Passing scores on all of the required Praxis content and pedagogy exams.
