Maine Teacher and Administrator Certification Application Information and Instructions

To be eligible for recommendation by the Certification Office, students completing a bachelor’s degree, a post baccalaureate certification or a Master of Special Education degree must graduate and have their degree posted to their WGU transcript.  Students who are pursuing a Master of Teaching degree must have marks of "passed” on their Degree Plan for all teacher preparation assessments to include any program required Praxis exams as well as all state required exams.

Maine accepts direct applications for licensure from those graduating from an out-of-state, approved educator preparation program like WGU's.  Follow the steps below to prepare your application for Maine licensure. You may also access the Maine Department of Education website for this information.

Step 1:

Request official transcripts in sealed envelopes from every college you have attended. Once your graduation application has been processed by the WGU Records Office you will receive a notification with information on how to order two complimentary copies of your official WGU transcript from the National Student Clearinghouse. You will have the option of selecting electronic or mail delivery. If you would like to order additional transcripts, see the WGU Transcript FAQ article. Do not request a transcript until you have received notice of graduation, so that your graduation date will appear on your transcript. MAT students may request a transcript after completing the teacher preparation portion of their MAT program. Be sure to leave transcripts you elect to have mailed to you in their sealed envelopes.

Step 2:  If you have not already done so, follow the directions on the Maine Department of Education website for completing a fingerprint background check through the state of Maine. You will not be issued a teaching certificate in Maine until you complete the fingerprinting process.

Step 3: Write to and request that the WGU Certification Officer send you a letter of recommendation for certification on university letterhead. The Certification Officer will mail the letter directly to the Maine DOE. Also, if you have not already reported your Praxis pedagogy exam scores to WGU, please send a copy of those scores to the Certification Officer as well.

Step 4: Download the application form available on the Initial Certification Page under "Application". You can also complete the application process online by following the step-by-step directions located under the "Certification Resources". 

Step 5: Complete and sign the application form, and compile your application packet:
1. Completed application form,
2. Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended,
3. Praxis/SLLA score report, documenting passing scores on all required exams,
4. If applying for a building administrator certificate, include evidence of three years of public school teaching experience.  This is usually on official letterhead and signed by your principal or district.
5. Application fee of $100 for initial teacher certification or $200 for initial administrator certification payable by check or credit card.  If paying by check, make the check out to "Treasurer State of Maine." If you are applying for more than one endorsement, each additional endorsement requires an additional $35 fee.
