Michigan has the following general requirements for all applicants for initial teacher certification who have completed an out-of-state teacher preparation program:

1. DEGREE REQUIREMENT: Possession of a Bachelor's degree.

2. PROGRAM REQUIREMENT: Completion of an elementary or secondary teacher education program that includes student teaching and is approved to lead to teacher certification in the home state of the program.

3. SECONDARY MAJOR REQUIREMENT: Secondary education teacher candidates must have a major or the equivalent in the subject area for which they are seeking certification.

4. FIRST AID AND CPR REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid certificate of course completion for First Aid training that includes Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for both children and adults.  This training may be from the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, or from a comparable organization approved by the Michigan Department of Education.  Complete information on this requirement and approved training providers is available in the MDE's Approved First Aid and CPR Providers document.

5. BASIC SKILLS EXAM: Passing scores on the required MTTC basic skills exam.

6. CONTENT EXAMS: Passing scores on the required MTTC content exams.
