Missouri Teacher Certification Application Requirements and Instructions (Approved Pathway)


Certification requirements: To be eligible for recommendation by the WGU Licensure Office, students completing a bachelor's degree, a Master of Science in Special Education degree, or a post baccalaureate teacher preparation program must graduate and have their degree posted to their WGU transcript.  Students who are pursuing a Master of Arts in Teaching degree who have a regionally accredited bachelor's degree must have marks of "pass” on their Degree Plan for all teacher preparation assessments to include any program required Praxis exams as well as all state required exams.  

Application Instructions for Certification via the Approved Licensure Pathway:


Step 1: Go to to create your online account with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). 


Step 2: Once you have created your online account, log in and click on the link to the “Educator Certification System” to enter the application section of the website, and then click on “3) Applications>Initial Professional” to access the Direct Application and the Application Checklist.  

Step 3: Complete the Initial Professional Application:


  • Verify that the information in your Profile is correct
  • Answer the Professional Conduct questions
  • Read and accept the Sworn Statement
  • Select "Western Governors University-MO" from the dropdown menu at the bottom of the application
  • Click the "Submit" button and wait for the confirmation message


Step 4: Email to notify WGU that you have submitted your application and are ready for WGU to prepare your recommendation. WGU will submit official WGU transcripts to Missouri DESE as part of the recommendation process but you will need to request official transcripts from any previously attended colleges or universities. Submit non-WGU official transcripts to:

Step 5: If you have not received a background clearance within the past 12 months, you must complete a fingerprint-based FBI/Highway Patrol Background Check for your application to be processed. Contact information and instructions for completing the background check can be found here
