Mississippi Teacher and Administrator Certification Application Information and Instructions

To be eligible for recommendation by the Certification Office, students completing a bachelor’s degree, a post baccalaureate certification or a Master of Special Education degree must graduate and have their degree posted to their WGU transcript.  Students who are pursuing a Master of Teaching degree must have marks of "passed” on their Degree Plan for all teacher preparation assessments to include any program required Praxis exams as well as all state required exams.

Mississippi accepts direct applications for licensure from those graduating from out-of-state, approved educator preparation programs like those offered by WGU.  Follow the steps below to prepare your application for Mississippi licensure. For more information, consult the Licensure Application Process for Mississippi.

Step 1: Download and review the Licensure Application Packet. Teacher candidates will be applying for an initial license via the Five-Year Teacher Education Route - Initial License.  Graduates of the Educational Leadership program will be applying for a Non-practicing Administrator License unless already employed as a school administrator, in which case application should be made for the Entry Level Administrator License.

Step 2: Request official transcripts in sealed envelopes from every college you have attended. Two copies of your final WGU transcript will be sent to you along with your diploma upon graduation. If you would like to order additional transcripts, see WGU Transcript Request. Do not request a transcript until you have received notice of graduation, so that your graduation date will appear on your transcript. MAT students may request a transcript after completing the teacher preparation portion of their MAT program. Be sure to leave your transcripts in the sealed envelopes to be included with your application packet.

Step 3: Submit the Institutional Verification Form, with your name filled in, to the WGU Certification Officer at the contact information below.  Fax and email submissions are preferred; email attachments should be in pdf format.

Teachers College Certification Officer

Fax: 801-401-7961

The Certification Officer will complete the form and mail it back to you in a sealed envelope for inclusion in your application packet.

Pedagogy Scores: Note that WGU requires you to submit all certification exam score reports in order for the university to complete any forms required for certification in your state, including pedagogy exams that were not required for graduation (see #3 in the State Certification Exam Requirements of this handbook). If you have not reported your Praxis content or pedagogy exam scores to WGU, you will need to send a copy of those scores to the Certification Officer before your Insitutional Verification Form can be completed.

Step 4: Those applying for an administrative license must download the Verification of Teaching Experience form, fill out the top portion, and submit it to the appropriate administrator or human resources official at the school district of current employment to verify the three years of teaching experience required of administrator candidates. If necessary, the form should be submitted to former employers as well to provide the necessary verifications.
Step 5: Fill out all sections of the application form.

Step 6: Compile all application documents:

1. Checklist from the application packet,
2. Official sealed transcripts from all colleges and universities attended,
3. Institutional Program Verification form,
4. Verification of Teaching Experience form(s), if applicable,
5. Application form,
6. Official PRAXIS or SLLA score report (if you did not list the Mississippi Department of Education as a recipient of your score report, you must include the official score report in your application packet. Copies are not accepted)

Step 7: Mail application documents to
