Montana Teacher Certification Application Information and Instructions
To be eligible for recommendation by the Certification Office, students completing a bachelor’s degree, a post baccalaureate certification, a Master of Science in Special Education or Masters in Educational Leadership degree must graduate and have their degree posted to their WGU transcript. Students who are pursuing a Master of Arts in Teaching degree must have marks of "passed” on their Degree Plan for all teacher preparation assessments to include any program required Praxis exams as well as all state required exams.
Montana accepts direct applications for licensure from students who have completed a teacher preparation program at WGU. Follow the steps below to prepare your application for Montana licensure
Step 1: If you have not already done so, you must first do a fingerprint-based background check through the Montana Department of Justice for the purpose of licensure. You can request a fingerprint packet and obtain additional information about the fingerprinting process through the Montana Office of Public Instruction website.
Step 3: Fill out the Applicant Information only of the University Recommendation Form with your personal information and send it to the WGU Certification Officer at the contact information below, who will fill out the remainder of the form and return it to you in a sealed envelope for inclusion in your application packet. Email submissions are preferred and should be in pdf format.
Step 4: Complete the Notary Page. Please note that this form must be signed in the presence of a Notary.
Step 5: Request official transcripts be sent electronically to email@example.com. To order official transcripts, see WGU Transcript Request. Do not request a transcript until you have received notice of graduation, so that your graduation date will appear on your transcript. Masters students may request a transcript after completing the teacher preparation portion of their Masters program.
Step 6: If you have not already done so, send verification of your Praxis test score(s) electronically to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Step 7: Complete and obtain an original completion certificate for "An Introduction to Indian Education for All in Montana" course.
Step 8: Compile all application documents:
1. University Recommendation form, still in its sealed envelope,
2. Completed Notary Page,
3. Original Completion Certificate for Indian Education course,
5. Check or money order for the application fee for $36 ($30 for each license plus a $6 filing fee), made payable to the Montana Office of Public Instruction.
