North Carolina Basic Skills Requirements

Basic Skills Exam: Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators: Combined Test (5751)

OR, if passed prior to August 31, 2014): Praxis I: Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST)

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has established the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators exam (Core) in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics as the state-required basic skills exam for those in an educator preparation program.  You must pass all three sections of the Core prior to beginning the Effective Teaching Practices (ETP) domain at WGU.  The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction will accept a Praxis Core composite score of 468 or greater to satisfy the basic skills requirement.
 

You should sign up to take your basic skills examination when you begin studying Foundations of Teaching to ensure you have time to complete the examination prior to enrollment in Effective Teaching Practices.


SAT/ACT Option: WGU allows the use of an ACT or SAT score to satisfy the Basic Skills requirement in North Carolina, using the following policy from http://www.ets.org/praxis/nc/:

Individuals with a total SAT® score of 1100 (Verbal and Quantitative only) are exempt from Core testing requirements for teacher education program administration.

 

  • Individuals with a total SAT score of less than 1100 (Verbal and Quantitative only), but a score of at least 550 on the Verbal test, are exempt from the Core tests in Reading and Writing for teacher education program admission.
  • Individuals with a total SAT score of less than 1100 (Verbal and Quantitative only), but a score of at least 550 on the Math test, are exempt from the Core test in Mathematics for teacher education program admission.


Likewise, individuals with a composite ACT® score of 24 are exempt from Core testing requirements for teacher education program admission.

 

  • Individuals with a composite ACT score of less than 24, but with a score of at least 24 on the English test, are exempt from the Core tests in Reading and Writing for teacher education program admission.
  • Individuals with a composite ACT score of less than 24, but a score of at least 24 on the Math test, are exempt from the Core test in Mathematics for teacher education program admission.
