North Carolina Master of Arts in Science Education (MASE) Certification and Exam Requirements

 

Licensed North Carolina educators can apply to add additional teaching areas to their current teaching licenses by taking and passing the Praxis Test for that area, by completing a state approved teacher education program that leads to licensure, or by completing 24 hours in the subject area with a grade of C or better.


In North Carolina, WGU's Master of Arts in Science Education (MASE) grades 5-9 program leads to an endorsement in Middle School Science (Grades 6-9).

 

1) Content Exam: Praxis 5440 Middle School Science

You must pass this exam to graduate from MASE9 and be recommended for certification. This exam also satisfies the WGU Program Requirement.

OR, if passed prior to September 1, 2014: Praxis 0439 Middle School Science

 

In North Carolina, WGU's Master of Arts in Science Education (MASE) grades 5-12 program leads to an endorsement in one of the following secondary sciences 


       Biology (Grades 9-12)
       Chemistry
(Grades 9-12)
       Earth Science
(Grades 9-12)

Content Exam: Praxis 5235, Biology, Content Knowledge.

You must pass this exam to graduate from this program and be recommended for certification. This exam also satisfies the WGU Program Requirement.

 

**Pedagogy Exam: Praxis 5624, Principles of Learning and Teaching (7-12). See note below. 

  Secondary Chemistry (MASE 5-12)

Content Exam: Praxis 5245, Chemistry: Content Knowledge

You must pass this exam to graduate from the program and be recommended for certification. This exam also satisfies the WGU Program Requirement.

 

**Pedagogy ExamPraxis 5624, Principles of Learning and Teaching (7-12). See note below.

  Secondary Earth Science (MASE 5-12)

Content Exam: Praxis 5571, Earth and Space Sciences: Content Knowledge

You must pass this exam to graduate from the program and be recommended for certification. This exam also satisfies the WGU Program Requirement

  Secondary Physics (MASE 5-12)

Content Exam: Praxis 5265, Physics: Content Knowledge
You must pass this exam to graduate from the program and be recommended for certification. This exam also satisfies the WGU Program Requirement

 

**Pedagogy Exam Note: If you are graduating from WGU's MASE Secondary Biology or Chemistry program, you can apply to add the respective endorsement based on the completion of a State-approved teacher preparation program and do not need to take the pedagogy test. If you choose to add Secondary Biology or Chemistry by testing alone, and did not pass this exam to obtain your initial North Carolina Professional Educator License, you will need to pass  Praxis 5624, Principles of Learning and Teaching (7-12). Secondary Earth Science and Physics do not require a pedagogy test.
