North Dakota Background Clearance Information

All North Dakota background checks submitted to the WGU certification office must be less than two years old to meet WGU requirements. USBE background checks are valid for three years.

If you are enrolled in an initial licensure program or in the MS Special Education program, you must complete both the North Dakota Clearance and the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) clearance described below.

If you are in any other program, you do not need to complete the USBE clearance and must only complete the North Dakota (and FBI, if applicable) background check as described below.

Prior to Preclinical Experience (PCE) and Demonstration Teaching (DT), you will need to clear a fingerprint-based (not a name-based) North Dakota Criminal History Record Check. Request that the results of the background check be sent to you, and then upload your background check results in your student Field Experience portal under PCE Background Clearance and/or DT Background Clearance.

WGU students who are currently employed in a school district and completed a recent fingerprint-based background check for hiring purposes may have the option of submitting a
School District Background Clearance Form.

If you have lived in states other than North Dakota after age 18, you are required to get a FBI national background check in addition to a North Dakota state check
 as described below:

1) Order a background check from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) by following these instructions

2) Have the background check results sent to you, and upload your background check results in your student Field Experience portal under PCE Background Clearance and/or DT Background Clearance.

North Dakota students enrolled in an initial licensure program or in the MS Special Education program will license initially in Utah and thus need to also complete a background check through the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) in addition to a North Dakota state background check as described below.

In certain circumstances, even though you have been cleared for demonstration teaching by WGU, the school district in which you are placed for field experiences may have an additional background check requirement that is not required by WGU. Or, the school district may make a different determination regarding a background clearance. You may be required to provide additional documentation to the school district. If so, you are also required to abide by the school district’s decision of approval or denial of the submitted background clearance information.
