New Jersey has the following requirements for all applicants for teacher certification (Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing):

1. DEGREE REQUIREMENT: Completion of at least a Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university. For specific major/course requirements for your area of intended certification, please see the CEAS certification guidelines for that endorsement area available at http://www.state.nj.us/cgi-bin/education/license/endorsement.pl?string=999&maxhits=1000&field=2..

2. EXAM REQUIREMENT: Passing scores on the required Praxis exams.

3. SUBJECT MATTER REQUIREMENT: All early childhood and elementary education students must have completed a major in the liberal arts or sciences or a minimum of 60 credits in the liberal arts. All WGU Bachelor's students will meet the liberal arts requirements in their WGU program. Master's and Post-Baccalaureate students must have met this requirement through their undergraduate degree. All secondary education students must complete a minimum of 30 credits in their subject area. All WGU social studies and mathematics students will meet these requirements in their WGU program. Master's and Post-Baccalaureate students must have met this requirement through their undergraduate degree.

Secondary Science Students Only: Secondary science education students will not satisfy the minimum of 30 credits in their subject area through WGU. These students must first apply for licensure in WGU's home-state of Utah and then apply in New Jersey through reciprocity.  See Utah Certification Requirements.

4. PROGRAM REQUIREMENT: Completion of a teacher preparation program that is approved to lead to teacher certification in the home state of the program. Please note that all teacher preparation coursework must appear on the transcript of a regionally accredited four-year college or university.

5. GPA REQUIREMENT: All teacher candidates must achieve a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in a baccalaureate degree program, higher degree program or in a state-approved post-baccalaureate certification program with a minimum of 13 semester-hour credits. All WGU graduates have the equivalent of a 3.0 in their WGU program.

6. PHYSIOLOGY AND HYGIENE REQUIREMENT: All teacher candidates must fulfill the physiology and hygiene requirement by presenting evidence of basic military training, OR by completing a course such as biology, health or nutrition that appears on a regionally accredited 4-year college or university transcript, OR by completing a 35 question True/False test administered in the county office of education. Please go to http://www.state.nj.us/education/finance/fp/psd/audit/1213/appendg.pdf in order to contact a county office of education.
