New Mexico has the following general requirements for all applicants for initial teacher certification:

1. DEGREE REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from a Bachelor's degree program at a regionally accredited college or university.

2. PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS: Completion of a state-approved teacher preparation program that includes student teaching.

3. BACKGROUND CLEARANCE: Background clearance resulting from completion of the required background check.

4. BASIC SKILLS EXAM: Passing scores on the NES Essential Academic Skills Exam.

5. CONTENT EXAMS: Passing scores on the NES content specialty exam specific to the area of certification sought.  See this link for details.
