NV Background Clearance Information-All Pathways

Nevada Background Clearance Information-All Pathways

All background checks submitted to the WGU certification office must be less than two years old to meet WGU requirements. Previously submitted background checks that will be over two years old by the end date of your Demonstration Teaching will need to be renewed by the background clearance deadline set for your cohort.

Prior to Preclinical Experience (PCE) and Demonstration Teaching (DT), You must obtain a copy of your personal Nevada criminal history by mailing the request
Form DPS-006, a fingerprint card with your rolled impressions, and a money order for $27.00 payable to the Nevada Department of Public Safety to:

Department of Public Safety
Records Bureau
333 West Nye Lane, Suite 100
Carson City, NV 89706

Fingerprint cards can be obtained and completed at your local police agency. Call (775) 684-6262 or see http://dps.nv.gov for for further information.

Upload your background check results in your student Field Experience portal under PCE Background Clearance and/or DT Background Clearance.

Alternatively, if you hold a valid Nevada substitute teaching license, then you can submit a copy of that license as verification of a current background clearance. The license will be considered valid as verification of a cleared background check until the expiration date of the license. **Note, all students in Washoe County must hold a substitute license in order to complete DT.

School District Clearance Option:
WGU students who are currently employed in a school district and completed a recent background check may have the option of submitting their school district clearance to WGU. Please see the
School District Background Clearance Article in this handbook for more information.

If you have lived in states other than Nevada after age 18, you are required to get a FBI national background check in addition to a NV state check
as described below:

1) Order a background check from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) by following these instructions

2) Have the background check results sent to you, and upload your background check results in your student Field Experience portal under PCE Background Clearance and/or DT Background Clearance.

Students in Early Childhood Education, Special Education Mild/Moderate, Middle Grades, Social Science and English who enrolled on or after 10/1/2015: Nevada students in these programs who enrolled on or after 10/1/2015 will be licensed initially in Utah and thus need to also complete a background check through the Utah State Board of Education (USBE). Click here for instructions on ordering your background clearance from the Utah State Board of Education (USBE).

The clearance that you obtained in order to do field experiences in this district will not suffice for a Nevada-wide clearance. You will need to obtain one of the clearances specified above.

Note: You will need to complete an additional clearance with the Nevada Department of Education as part of the licensure process. See the NV Teacher Certification Application Information article in this handbook.

In certain circumstances, even though you have been cleared for demonstration teaching by WGU, the school district in which you are placed for field experiences may have an additional background check requirement that is not required by WGU. Or, the school district may make a different determination regarding a background clearance. You may be required to provide additional documentation to the school district. If so, you are also required to abide by the school district’s decision of approval or denial of the submitted background clearance information.
